Is the 80 acres all good bottom land? Only pitfall I see with your plan is that full time job. Add in the weather not hqy and a few machinery breakdowns Hope you have help. With 80 hp you can run a 10 foot discbine just fine and it faster than running a sickle machine mmoney you won’t need to buy another tractor for the time. A lesson I learned a long time ago is that one ought to spend more effort in selling than discounting.

)}Just to start, I’m not planning and don’t expect to make a living off this, and I understand there’s more profitable side jobs. As my garden grows every year, I wanted to try practicing agriculture on a production basis, and I also love old tractors and machines. My plan in short is to lease land in my area, hopefully making up acres, and produce hay. I would do this with a Ford 8n, disc harrow, sickle bar mower, hay rake, and small square baler. As far as leases go, that’s the one thing that would kill the plan to start if it doesn’t work. I live in a rural-suburban township, and all the plots of land 30 acres plus are already leased by a single guy, who leases thousands of acres, owns millions of dollars with of equipment, and mostly grows corn, soybean, grain, and some hay. However, there are many properties acres that are too small for him to lease, and some of these aren’t even used or are vacant. By not used I mean open fields that people just pay to get mowed on a monthly basis or so. I could be wrong, but I can see it as an opportunity for cheap or maybe even free leases. The market for hay in my area is relatively strong as. Just a few miles north of me its all horse county, horse farm after horse farm. The local guy with thousands of acres I believe uses hay as more a cover crop, because the stuff he bales is junk, it’s a lot of weeds and he bales it the same day it’s cut. The equipment is a bit of trouble too, but from what I’ve read it should work. A Ford 8N would be my choice of tractor because they’re readily available in my area and they are probably the cheapest reliable farm tractor. The hardest part would be pulling a bailer with no live PTO, but I’ve heard people having success with small bailers, and most the properties are flat ground with few obstacles. As far as the rest of the equipment, I can buy old ones in great condition for cheap. I hope someone can properly answer your questions. They are now bucks a bale 12 years later. So if you can transport your bales that may be the money ticket you are looking. Our smaller farm in Monterey County, CA the bales are 22 dollars everywhere but if you shop around in Northern CA Redding-Chico areas you can find them for dollars. I would look into long haulers and transportation costs. Chandelier Size Help — s Farm House.⓬

This time we got a chance to sit and chat about the viability of a hay farm. The basic idea is to have a small farm that only does hay. You would only have a few select pieces of equipment and not a whole bunch. This would be somewhere to start for a new farmer because the initial capital you need is lower than what you need for a cash crop farm. There are a couple of things that are assumed here, so I am going to outline them here to give you an idea. This means that you can get away with not having either of those pieces of equipment. You can contract out seeding. I actually went out and looked for each piece of equipment to make sure that I could find them at the price that I indicated. Ideally, you would want two used tractors if one breaks down. In that situation you can use the other. Also, it would allow you to pick up bales as they are dropped.

More small-acreage farmers are cutting and baling themselves. Two farmers explain how they not only save money, but also how they produce a better-quality product. Most days, from 5 a. Hammann, who, among his many other duties, is also the assistant chief of the local volunteer fire department, estimates he sells 25 to 30 head of cattle per year at weaning age. Living and working about a three-hour drive east from Hammann, Thalman is a full-time postal employee in Centralia, Ill. Around the ranch, there are just numerous things that have to be done on a daily basis. Thalman checks over a pound round bale made with his Hesston baler. Thalman and Hammann are among the growing ranks of the do-it-yourself hay producers. One of the main drivers of the trend is that less hay is being produced, leading to higher prices. Also, significant advances in equipment have made it more cost-effective for many farmers to grow their own as opposed to buying feed or hiring custom harvesters. Even growing hay on plots of land once considered too small to be worth the effort has become an increasingly popular solution for producers looking to squeeze the value out of every dollar, hour and acre. From to , planted corn acres in the U. Conversely, the number of acres planted in hay has decreased by 5. Drought, too, led to lower production.
Advantages of Field Hay Feeders
I’m trying to get an idea of how much one could make as a farmer. I’m thinking if anyone knows how much they’ve made off of their farmland and how many acres they have, I would just devide the profit by the acres used. So if you think you can help me figure this out, it would be much appreciated. Be sure to tell what crop is being used. I use a 5 acre plot of arable land complete with irrigation.
